I have had this problem on and off. Sometimes when I download a file through filezilla ftp and open it in notepad++, the formatting is all screwed up from the way it was when I uploaded the file. These files are never touched in any way through online editors, etc.

Usually, it will convert css or php files to be all on one line. It can really screw up a php page with comments to the point of the file not working!

I originally thought it could be Wordpress related, but further tests show it is not. I also tried to force an ASCII transfer(rather than "auto-detect") but that did not help.

Is there a higher recommended open source ftp than Filezilla?

Anyone have this problem ever?

I move that we add a hypothetical category to post questions in.

Seems like every time I post a question, even after hours of research, I find the answer right after I post my question!

Turns out, it was any time I was editing someone else's work and the setting was not interpreted correctly as ANSI / Dos/Windows, etc...it was MAC etc...

Therefore, immediately upon uploading/downloading only those files got screwed up. I never thought to check that!

Resolved!

I have already edited some files and the format has changed and some spaces were erased. Is there anyway to retrieve the old format?

There is really no way to retrieve an older version unless you took a back-up. IS there any way you could redownload filezilla, that might correct the problem.

Mac is based on Unix as is Linux. One difference between these and Windows is that Windows uses a carriage return and line feed at the end of a line, while Unix, Linux and Mac OS use a single newline character, of the same value as Windows' line feed. Your FTP software when using ascii to transfer a file for either upload or download should sort out what is required at the receiving end of a file transfer.

Perhaps a re-install will help.

Mac OS X now uses a ASCII chr(10) (linefeed) as a new line marker prior to that the Mac format used a ASCII chr(13) (carriage return)
