As the title says, I'm trying to set up Apache 2.2.15 and PHP 5.3.2 on my home pc, for testing purposes.
The Apache installs fine (thank god ), but then comes the problem. When installing PHP, if I try to change the components, it spits out the "GetObject failed. You will have to manually configure..." . If I select the default installation, all goes fine (Selected Apache 2.2xx plugin), but only until I restart Apache.
Then it shows me "Error: The requested operation has failed!" and that's it.
Default installations on both, nothing changed in configurations.
I've tried reinstalling more than a dozen times, different configurations and stuff, tried reading many installation tutorials on the internet, the closest one was thesitewizard.com one, but it said to use the zip "installation", and when I use that, phpBB (the target of all this) doesn't recognise that I have mysql installed (but I do have it).
Once I somehow managed to get past all this, but when installing phpBB, at the phase of database stuff (name, host, port etc.) it said it cannot connect, even though I put everything as is...
Maybe someone could explain to me WTF is going on 'cause this problem is crushing my nerves :@

Edit: windows XP Pro SP3, if that means anything...

Try using xampp if you want to avoid a lot of headaches.

The forum i'm moderating uses apache+php+mysql, so xampp isn't an option.
I'm trying to set up the exact same environment at home.

ermm the amp in xamp or wamp stands for

Apache MySQL Php

HOWEVER if you want to recreate your hosting setup, you will need to have a machine running Linux to test on. Because Apache, MySQL and Php behave differently when running on Windows to how the behave when running on Linux/Unix.
Case sensitivity being the main issue.

Phpbb works no problem on xampp. Like Chris mentioned, xampp is just an all-in-one, easy-to-install, package for apache, mysql and php.

can anyone offer a SOLUTION instead of "try using this"?
the thing doesn't work with default installs with everything by default (locations including, of course)...

I once had Apache 2.0.xx running on Windows XP, and as long as everything was on the same drive partition I could specify the same paths for Perl and PHP and had server side includes and everything exactly as it was on my host that was using a version of Linux. My path to Perl was \usr\bin\perl.exe, so even my Perl scripts could specify /usr/bin/perl and run both at home and on the site.

The only things different was I had to set permissions on the scripts that I uploaded for them to work, and I kept all file names in lowercase so that they worked the same in bothg places. Avoids the case that index.html and INDEX.HTML are different files on Linux and overwrite each other on Windows.

However, I did not get involved with MySQL.

You may have to break down and get a computer running the same OS and the same everything your host is running.

I'm sorry I can't offer more, and after all that you have been through already, I can't blame you for wanting to not have to start over from the beginning again.

Take a step back, put it on the back burner and put your mind off it for awhile, then maybe have a friend come over and review your work and perhaps the two of you can make someting tick.

I wish you luck.
