The company I work for does business with a local sports team. The team emails out a newsletter that has a link to our website. My cpanel offers awstats which allows me to see where people connect to the site from. However, it lumps "Direct address / Bookmark / Link in email..." all into one category, so I have no idea if we are getting any traffic from the newsletter link at all.

My question: Is there any way for me to find out how much traffic is coming from email links?

I assume that since the browser is being opened and the URL is being filled out, it works the same as direct address and I'm out of luck. But I figured I would ask the informed just in case. Thanks.

...or you could have a seperate landing page for e-mail links (i.e. put a unique URL in the e-mails, and then count the hits to that page)?

Or redirect to the page for email users.

I would agree this is the best idea. Create a landing page specifically for the email links.

Thanks to everyone for your great suggestions! The seperate landing page might work since the newsletter is made and distributed by the other organization and a URL change would be a fairly simple request. I'll mention it to my boss.

Thanks again.

Trouble is that way you are creating duplicate content and if the email readers like it they will promoting the duplicate of the original, you may lose some organic links due to that on your original piece.

That's when you would use URL parameters, record the request, then 301 redirect without the parameter(s).
