Here's the situation hopefully someone can shed some light on this

I currently have a hostgator 'baby plan' setup
I registered a domain a while ago and added it to my hosting plan through the 'add-on' domain option
installed a wordpress blog and added www in the general settings

when searching through google it doesn't show "www" which I think is just bizarre..I mean the other internal pages have "www" added.

does anyone know why this is or how I can add www to my domain?

Yes it is perfectly normal.

The "www." is simply a subdomain that is by convention aliased (CNAME) to the hostname.

You can choose if you want it there or not in webmaster tools.

YOU CAN'T!

All that the setting in Google Webmaster tools is tell GOOGLE which version you want GOOGLE to index.

It does NOT make any difference to what the rest of the Internet sees!

You can change it from google webmaster tools, or

# force www
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^example\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.example.com/$1 [R=301,L]

Add this in your .htaccess file after a while your results will be changed to "www."
