Well, before i switched to hostgator my servers were cluttered with bandwidth issues and HUGE bills for the amount of servers that were visiting my forums (over 98% of which were spam). Of course at first as a newbie to the website world i added all the safety features i could, but because i was using smf i was kind of in the middle of safety and torment. What happened was i had no idea how php worked at first (i do now of course). I added all the mods and hacks(emphasis on the word hacks) i could and still everything was getting spammed. When i finally learned my lesson it was too late, a member of the infamous 4chan site decided to lead a two person army (i actually knew who these people were and they hated me already for certain things i said about them on another forum). A user reported horrific findings the next day, bloody images and pornographic materials filled my site. I removed it before looking and decided to destroy the database.

I have learned my lesson since then and i have decided to build my own safety scripts as well as use the simple "stop forum spam" software.

Have you ever had these kinds of problems?

Can't say I ever had those kinds of problems, but I suggest you check out my signature as it seems relevant to what you mentioned. If your website is of good enough quality, you may want to consider using a security seal. It may even increase the amount of sales you make from a website!
