Hello everyone,

Am learning Apache from Xampplite 1.7.3. I've setup an isolated network of 4 computers (not connected to Internet)
Apache is running on Windows XP SP3. What am trying to do is suppose if i click on
the link "Mail" on webpage http://www.yahoo.com it shud redirect me to http://www.mail.yahoo.com
instead of https link.

I dont wanna learn https as of now as it would become too complex for me.
I was searching about .htaccess method of redirecting but found it too confusing.

Please give your reply by giving the above example

Please help

Am learning about Apache and I thought that if I could use names of famous websites then people can connect & visualise with the problem in a better way than using a random name...Just a thought, I can be wrong

Am basically trying to understand how redirection works but not taking into consideration https coz I find https complex and dont want to do too many things at a time.

So what I've done is I've saved the default yahoo homepage on my isolated webserver. Now on clicking the link "Mail" which has an http link in href but converts to https and displays the https page on screen. What I want to do is instead of going to the https screen the webserver should give the http://mail.yahoo.com page thru .htaccess redirection.

Please help

BTW https: is no different to http: just delivered via a different port and with the communication secured, which the server & client handles. The files are exactly the same.

Well you can't do that on YOUR server.

.htaccess works on requests (incoming traffic) made to your server.

I can only see the href link which is already http: when I hover my mouse on "Mail". However, when I click on it am taken to an https: link when am connected to the internet. If I only take into account the yahoo homepage and the yahoo mail page on a local isolated server the click on the link mail does not work coz of the redirection thing going to https which is not present on my local isolated server.

That's because Yahoo! redirect the http: protocol for mail. to the https: protocol on THEIR servers

You CANNOT AFFECT Yahoo! with a .htaccess file located ON YOUR SERVER

Just because the Yahoo! homepage is on your local server it does NOT mean that your server becomes Yahoo!
Connected to the internet or not.

K in that case forget yahoo.com. So what do I need to put in my .htaccess file so that when I click on a link which has its href to an http: but convert to https being overridden by my .htaccess file and instead be redirected to http:??

Now had you simply posted that in the first place instead...

redirect https: to http:
Code:
Options +FollowSymlinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} ^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.yourdomain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
