Hello all, long time lurker etc etc but appreciate all the chat that goes on in these forums. I have an issue though...

I have just swapped to a virtual server for my site as it was outgrowing its shared home, also i wanted my own IP for SEO etc, anyway, i jumped the gun and after setting the DNS switched the site to live and the old one off, thinking there would be enough overlap, but now my site http://www.kempley-helicopters.com is offline. It works via the IP address, so the server is fine, i am now just hoping it is taking time to register my new nameservers.

This is all i have done in regards to the DNS, my settings in PLESK:

*.webmail.kempley-helicopters.com CNAME kempley-helicopters.com.
xxx.xxx.18.184 PTR kempley-helicopters.com.
ftp.kempley-helicopters.com CNAME kempley-helicopters.com.
kempley-helicopters.com NS ns1.kempley-helicopters.com.
kempley-helicopters.com NS ns2.kempley-helicopters.com.
kempley-helicopters.com A xxx.xxx.18.184
kempley-helicopters.comMX (10) mail.kempley-helicopters.com.
kempley-helicopters.comTXT v=spf1 +a +mx -all
mail.kempley-helicopters.com A xxx.xxx.18.184
ns1.kempley-helicopters.comA xxx.xxx.18.184
ns2.kempley-helicopters.com A xxx.xxx.18.185
webmail.kempley-helicopters.com A xxx.xxx.18.18
www.kempley-helicopters.com CNAME kempley-helicopters.com.
13 DNS records total

my (fasthosts) control panel settings for dns i have specified my two nameservers instead of there own nameservers, and i have added two glue records, one for each nameserver, ns1 and ns2 and pointed each of these records at the two IP's of my site.

Is this all i should have done in regards to the nameservers and records?

Thanks for any prospective replies.

Cheers, Ryan.

Please ignore my request for help, it all appears to be working now. So it looks like it just took some time for the nameservers to update.

Cheers, Ryan.

clear your local DNS cache

type
ipconfig /flushdns<enter> in a command prompt or just wait it out for the 96 hours it may take.

also i wanted my own IP for SEO
Why??????

Yeah, It was working at my office, just come home and it wasnt, cleared the cache and all seems ok...

Sorry, i should have re-phrased that, my own IP so i know what actions are going on at the address. I know it doesnt directly improve SEO, but on my old IP there were some 200 websites, i hear rumours an IP can be penalized due to other people being naughty on a shared host. As it stands my old IP was fine, but i wanted one so i know im the only one at that address, if that makes sense

EDIT: i set my own namservers on my server via plesk, but i also have the possibility of using the DNS servers of the host company (I assume so anyway). Is there any benefit/disadvantages of doing it myself, as opposed to using the hosts dns servers? Im new to this, so maybe i have to use my own nameserver?

cheers.

IP's do not get "penalised", SEs are aware of shared hosting.

Not really.

It still was not working for some users, after investigating, it was 50% of the people who could not access my site, indicating only one nameserver was working.

It appears i didnt realise i had to have 3 IP addresses to run the site and two nameservers, seems pretty obvious now. Is this rite, as you didnt mention it when you originally replied to my question after i stated my settings?

Bump for someone to take a look at my settings please, as the site is still down. The only difference now from my original post is i added another IP for the nameserver. So IP1 is the website, and IP's 2 and 3 are the nameservers. Each of these have A and NS records, along with my registrar i have noted my own nameserver names, and added two glue records for this. Since the last change was made, its been around 60 hours... Previous to that it was semi-working, but was only using one nameserver, so thats why i added the third IP for the nameserver. Many Thanks.

On a whois lookup the nameservers are

Quote:
Domain servers in listed order:
NS2.KEMPLEY-HELICOPTERS.COM 109.228.17.183
NS1.KEMPLEY-HELICOPTERS.COM 109.228.17.182
So it would appear that "glue" records do not match your NS records

Thanks for getting back to me, i do appreciate it.

My glue records...

Host Name Points to
ns1.kempley-helicopters.com xxx.xxx.17.182
ns2.kempley-helicopters.com xxx.xxx.17.183

On the hosts control panel it does say "UK only" for the glue records, im not sure what this means.

Also, i just edited my old glue records, rather than adding a new one, but it states the correct details for the nameserver. Would it maybe have updated quicker if i had added complete new records and deleted the old?

Thanks again.

P.S to confirm, my current DNS setitngs..

*.webmail.kempley-helicopters.com. CNAME kempley-helicopters.com.

You forgot to mention that you are with Fasthosts (live-servers.net) who are NOT renowned for the reliability of their DNS servers.

Best thing you can do is to leave the settings alone until it resolves itself (pun intended)

Haha. Ah yes, Fasthosts, ok, ill leave it as-is. I can sleep semi-easy knowing my settings are ok, hopefully it doesnt take to long to come back. Im hoping i wont get any negative effects from google due to the pages being offline for a few days. Thanks for the help.

Just to confirm, my settings are correct though yes?

I got confused with the fact some tutorials use one IP as the website address and the first nameserver, and the second for the second nameserver.

In my case i am using 3 IP's for the two nameservers and website. But this means i dont have the overlap of one nameservers IP being the same as my actual website. Is this needed, or are there any other entries i need to make?

Cheers.

two IPs are sufficient, there is every likelyhood that all the IPs resolve to the same hardware anyway.

So, we are just about at the magical 72 hours, and nothing is working. I also checked it on a site that checks for the dns settings over several different world regions to map prorogation, alas it is not found on any of these...

Ideas? Anything i may have missed? The site works via IP, the only things i have done so far i have detailed in this thread, maybe i missed something? Or is it time to get on the phone to fasthosts?

Cheers.

I think i found the problem, fasthosts have an option to add glue records, which i did, but i just read they are UK only, as i have .com, i need to register them via a host record for an international doamin, but i cannot find an option for this. Anyone who knows the answer to this, and i assume this is what has caused my problem?

EDIT:Ok, as above, technical issue on the fasthosts website that only allowes me access to glue records when it should have been host records to register my .com nameservers.

I would say thanks, but it appears my settings were overlooked, as im sure someone would have known it was a bad thing to be using glue records for a .com nameserver? If i would have waited for it to resolve itself, i would have been waiting a long time.... Cheers, anyway.

We have glue records for the .com names we run as name servers, never had a problem.

New registrations are accessible within a couple of hours.
Transfers in take about 24 - 48 hours.
Transfers out about the same.
