It will take 3 to 6 months to get the content ready so should I purchase a domain name now and stick a page up just to get it indexed or should I wait and launch the whole site when it's finished?
I go with a wodpress blog. Use all in one seo. Put a relevant article on homepage w all your keywords in bold. Try not to overdue it. Submit to 3 major search engines. Let it set while you get content ready.

Don't listen to this guy, he's setting you up for failure and also to look unprofessional.
If you have some kind of "service" to offer once your ready, Put up a simple splash page with some cool graphics etc and a brief saying what your selling / what it will be.
And if you will need subscribers once you launch, Add a simple ( keep me informed ) button asking for their email address.
At least then when you do launch, Your site is indexed with some keywords already and you may have a bunch of people you can mail when your finally live.
Maybe add some incentive like ( pre launch access ) etc..
You achieve a few things here.
- Pre launch hype.
- Pre launch subscribers / possible sales leads down the line.
- Site being indexed.
- Keywords already being indexed in the wild.
- The chance that if your site is that awesome you will start getting background hype / possible blogs about your upcoming awesomeness.

If you set up a coming soon website, you can use a robots.txt so that Google doesn't cache your site and visitors see "coming soon" for the next 3 months.
I would rather wait until the site is ready that then get the domain and start seo. You will lose 3-6 months of domain time, so you'll need to renew it again in 6-9 months.

I suggest waiting for a lot of your writing(s) for it to be prepared first, and then choose the title (domain name). Unless you're sure enough what you want the title to be. Aside from that, I suggest having the writing(s) prepared before deciding how you want the background or/and theme to look like so that it's relevant.

I wouldnt just put coming soon, put up some information about what is coming soon, I would make a pre launch video and upload it to Youtube and offer them an incentive to get them to visit you on the launch date. create blogs and inform people about what you are doing and create a facebook page telling everyone what you are doing and what the site will involve, doing this will be good because you can ask others what they would like to see, tally the score up and work out what people want to see.
I will strongly recommend you to select the hosting provider that offer 99.9% network up time and also make a facebook page mentioning the contents of your website to see what users think about your expected business
