I'm using XAMPP in windows xp system locally and i want to activate htaccess. I'm trying to rename the file to .htaccess but the win xp doesn't allow this change. Any ideas?

Windows will not let you rename a file to .htaccess.

Instead you can open the htaccess.txt file in a text editor, ie Notepad. Choose “Save as..” and select “All types (*.*)” next to file type. Now type the filename “.htaccess” and click save.

Hope that helps!

Windows will allow a filename change to .htaccess directly.

You simply need to set it so file extensions are visible.

FolderOptions -> View tab -> uncheck "Hide extensions for know file types"

then you can change extensions in Windows Explorer.

It doesn't matter. The information will still be useful to someone that searched for it,

.htaccess file can not be edited on windows, you have to rename it to anything like htacess.txt and modify the file content and after uploading the file into the server rename it to .htacess from FTP

Wrong.

.htaccess can be edited on Windows using TextPad or Notepad++.
