Whats the difference between these two?

YSlow page speed tool recommends GZIP but my hosting company (HostMonster) doesnt have it enabled. They use DEFLATE by default
apparently.

I suspect that DEFLATE doesnt do as good a job but puts less strain on
the servers. So being cheapskates, thats why they chose that particular setup.

Does that sound about right?

So you want to speed up the load time by a few micro-seconds only to slow down the rendering speed by maybe a couple of tenths of seconds. And this is going to help how exactly?

The nature of the question is, what's the difference between the two mods.
And why would the hosting company choose to implement DEFLATE but not GZIP?

The debate has been going on for some time.

And of course GZip is based on the deflate algorithm.
