.htaccess file

Please help and i hope im in the right section.

I need help with creating a .htaccess file to redirect a page
currently www.mywebsite.com and www.mywebsite.com/index.html comes up as 2 pages and when reading seo tips it best to have the www.mywebsite.com/index redirect to 301 to www.mywebsite.com

Please can any help with .htaccess file where and how to make.

also forgot to mention site is standard html hosted by godaddy account

i tried

redirect 301 /index.html http://wwwmywebsite.com
and it comes up as blank page
