I think it looks awful, like it was designed in the earliest version of frontpage.

looks like dream weaver was used. You need to build a site ground up with a text editor like Programmers Notepad or something before it's really worth money. Also, its has to be compatible with all browsers, load fast, it has to have a good color scheme, and SEO optimised. Thats my opinion of what I would do before selling it.

If you're asking for money, I'd say you'd need to code the site by hand (e.g. using NotePad++) with HTML and CSS and make sure it conforms to the W3C's standards.

While you could charge for Dreamweaver sites, and people do, if you're thinking about asking for money for sites in the future, I recommend you learn HTML and CSS and do it by hand - the results are much better usually.

I didn't actually think of really asking for much money really just the domain. I did that when I was new to websites a while ago and I agree that it doesn't look good. Now i know html and css and a little flash so that was just an old website I was trying to get rid of.

Just curious to know what everyone else's first or early websites looked like. Aren't we being a little hard on Nick. Why not tell him how to improve the site or at least some specifics on what might be wrong.

As for DreamWeaver you all do realize there are a lot of web designers making good money using DW?

Nick I'd say you can't charge in this case because you promised it for free.

For the site itself I do think it could use improvement. The text is hard to read for a couple of reasons. There's not enough contrast between the the text color and the background. The text in the body is on the small size to me (though I think it will be fine for some) and the small size adds to the difficulty in reading.

I also notice you're using serif fonts in your headings and menu items on the left. Sans-serif fonts are usually easier to read online, though if the text is large enough a serif font can be fine.

I don't care for the scrolling text. For me it only distracts me from the rest of the page. The scrolling text would be much more effective if it was static right below the site name instead of scrolling by.

The AdSense block looks very much out of place as does the affiliate image. Try to blend them into the design better.

Back to the initial question of can you charge. Again for this site no, because you promised it for free. Assuming you hadn't I'd still say you'd want to improve your design skills some before charging, but I don't think you need to create the most beautiful sites in the world before charging.

You can charge as soon as you find someone willing to pay.

To improve your design skills one of the best things you can do is spend time looking at other sites and when you come across one you like bookmark it and spend some time thinking about why you like it and try incorporating some of those things into your next design. Don't copy a design, but if you like sites with gradient backgrounds for example, learn how to create that kind of background and try them in your own designs.

Also look at the source code of sites you like and try to understand how they're put together. While people do use Dreamweaver to create professional sites you'll benefit immensely from learning how to hand code sites.

Well, if you said that you would give it to them for free, that's what you should do.
If you are asking just out of interest, my answer would be no.
It's a nice website, sure, and well done, but it doesn't look professional.

Before asking for any money I think you need to improve the existing site.If you learn new skills and create a more interesting site, whilst still keeping it simple, you can then look at demanding some sort of payment.

Firstly it is not clear what the objective or purpose is of your site. You need to state what your iste is about and make it easy for the user to determine this.

The colour scheme needs to be improved. Red text on a blue background is not good. If you were colour blind you would not be able to read this page.

Also look at your layout as your content is too big for my widescreen 15" screen. Look at limiting your page width to 800 pixels.

I think you have a long way to go before charging someone, however if you put the effort in I am sure you will come out on top.

Keep up the good work.

Thanks, anyway I am getting quite a bit of traffic and revenue to the site so I think I'll keep it for a while. However I am redesigning and making it look professional. Now that I have Photoshop there are many possibilities and ways to improve the look of the site. Because I know its not that great right now.
