While you could say the e-commerce area was correct for this, this post actually concerns the web design BEHIND those sites.

I'm wondering because I'm on the verge of going into web design, but I'm afraid I'll be asked to do an e-commerce site of some sort and I've got no idea about the code required to run the behind the scenes part of all of that. Do you simply use an existing shopping cart etc. or make one by hand using PHP or something else?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

In ASP.NET this is easy as pie. You choose a provider for your needs ( the .NET built in stuff, Commerce Server, whatever you'd like ) and then you skin it to your liking.

I think generally most companies have a designer and a programmer. The guy who's good with the code doesn't have to know about artistic whatnot and the designer doesn't need to know about implementations.

Sadly, I'm working alone on this and probably will be for the forseeable future - I've got to do both jobs! Thanks for the info about ASP.NET - I'll have a look at that
