Template breaking with certain content

I have a liquid template that stretches perfectly fine. It works great for 800x600 all the way up to anything bigger and looks good. But my content is too big. What I mean by that is I have images for some pages that are pretty big such as 713 x 1100 and others that are just as big or even bigger like 1432x1100. These obviously don't fit on 800x600 with navigation on the right and left side (I have user controls on the left and site nav on the right). I took it out and the smaller images and content can fit but the bigger ones obviously still force scrolling. But I lose that navigation controls no matter what. And I can't shrink the images or thumbnail them. That destroys the point of having them there.

I have thought about getting rid of the right and left nav columns on those pages and then have javascript that will drop down if the user wants to use those functions. Just a simple javascript toggle. Don't know if you think that is a bad move usability wise. If the user doesn't have javascript though they aren't going to be able to use it. I'm not sure what I can do.

My question is what do you suggest doing? Or even do you have any ideas on how to try and tackle the problem or the best way of going at it. I'm pretty new to this and so I don't know. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Thumbnails is always best. Always. :P
Seriously, you don't want such a huge image pop onto your screen without warning.

Defeats the point of the page. They go to the page to see the image and other content together. I can't have them click on it and go see the image and then have to come back to the page and interact with everything for ever single page. It would be a pain in the butt for everyone.

I want people to allow them to put up their comics. Many of them are too big to fit my current layout. So I need to hack it. I want them to view it, talk about it, interact with it, and move on without having to come and go to that page multiple times. It is more like a viewer. I want that ability. I believe shrinking their work would destroy it.

Is that ever going to work on an 800 by 600 resolution, if all the images are going to be bigger than that?

I know that the image will never fit. I want to try and find a way that they can still access the content and be able to interact with it. Of course they will need to scroll at points for a couple of images. That happens. What I want is a solution to the usability issue. How can I have them scroll as little as possible but still access the navigation controls? My answer will probably be a javascript toggle. Either that completely change my header to just navigation for those pages.
