How do I design a website?
Do i first design it in Photoshop, then slice the image up and put into tables in dreamweaver?

But if i do that. Do I run into search engine problems.

Help me Please.

Thanks

Design in photoshop or other graphics program - yes
Tables in DW -- NO ! Not unless you want to stay out of date
Suggest you try this book: http://www.sitepoint.com/books/css2/

lol... I'd say your graphics program is for creating the images for use on your site (but I would say that!). You can do the actual design on paper if you want, or any image editor or even start with a basic CSS layout. How you do it is up to you, every one has a different method

You have to 'slice' up your graphic in Photoshop to fit into the page layout (HTML Structure) you have set up in Dreamweaver. You use CSS to STYLE the presentation of the HTML content.

I recommend not using Dreamweaver at all and using a coding program (anything similar to Notepad will do) and then FTPing the images to your server and constructing it that way.

Just to say - if you are using images rather than text (I doubt you are, but have to say), i.e. using images with all of the page content in the image, this isn't good for search engines. I've seen people construct entire pages from a number of small images, and have no actual highlightable text since it's all buried in the image. This obviously isn't good for search engines.

OK LOL

thanks to all of your help i have finally figured out how to tie the 2 programs together.

Now, how do i make the CSS take up the entire browser no matter what monitor my website may be displaying on?

I have 2 images on the right hand side of the webpage. The problem is when i test out the website on different monitors the images only stay at the 800px width and not at the end of the browser....if that makes any sense lol
What am I missing?

Thanks again for all the help. I really appreciate it!

You'll get why no-one uses them for basic layout anymore if you try using a screen reader or try FANGS FireFox addon.

Tables are meant for tabular DATA, not for layout. Now that we have reasonable use of CSS, there is no REASON to use tables for layout other than being a lazy designer.

A great article here on why it's not good to use tables for layout:

As for the 100% height problem, check the stickies in the HTML and CSS forums.

As i was learning tables for my upgrade I found them really hard to use. Then I tried CSS, great suggestion. I found the concepts so much easier to understand. From how to hierarchy to how to apply them.
I am not the greatest with them and still find something’s a bit difficult to comprehend but the theory is a lot more relatable to me.

I'm glad you are getting to grips with CSS It's a much better alternative to tables, both for visitors and ultimately therefore for webmasters, plus it's a lot easier.
