Website re-directs - how?

Hi all, I've done some searching for info on this but being a bit thick I need a bit more help! I've just about redesigned my website which has resulted in a restructure. However, i'm concerned that some visitors may have bookmarked pages that will no longer exist so i would like to redirect them to a relevant part of the new site. How can i do this? FWIW I think my site is running on a Windows server (this seemed to make a difference in one article/post I read).

Thanks, Lol

I would have recommend .htaccess which is simple but if you are indeed running on a windows server (I would investigate that) I don't think it'd work.

There is a way to do the equivalent of a 301 redirect using IIS.

That IIS example won't totally work (the ASP one). Googlebot will throw a 500 error without the Response.End line in there.

Okay, so now imagine it's Forest Gump at the keyboard amd we're there! I've had a look at the page (thanks Lady) but can't get it to work. The page I wish to redirect from is www.17minutes.co.uk/Newpeople.asp and send it to www.17minutes.co.uk/People.htm.

Could someone help me out with the syntax please?

Thanks, Lol

the Smart 404 page would work
He says, sneaking another self promo link in

or add
Code:
with response
   .status = "301 Moved Permanently"
   .addheader "Location", "/people.asp"
   .end()
end with
to the top of newpeople.asp

Be careful when using mixed case page names on a windows server. Search engines are case sensitive, but windows is not.
So People.asp and people.asp are the same on the server but different to the SEs, so you can end up with duplicates.

Thanks Chris, this is what I have at the top of the page on Newpeople.asp and I'm trying to redirect to People.htm:
Code:
<SCRIPT LANGUAGE="JavaScript">
with response
   .status = "301 Moved Permanently"
   .addheader "Location", "www.17minutes.f2s.com/People.htm"
   .end()
end with
</SCRIPT>
It's not working. Have I "pressed the idiot button" again?
Thanks, Lol

Thanks Chris! I originally put it in <% %> delimiters but into a Javascript asp page. D'Oh! It works a treat thank you, and for your patience I've added to the old talkupation.

Thanks again, Lol
