Hello guys,

Recently we asked this guy to see how much it would cost for him to design a website template for me (just a design, no coding required), and he wanted $500 AUD for it (around $450USD). Am I being ripped off?
If so, what is the general price for a website design?

Well what did you ask him to design for you? How complex was it? You get what you pay for and you pay for what you want, so...

Well, I haven't went on with the job yet, I've just gotten the quote for now.
I needed a few 5 pages web template designed (for lawyers).
All I needed him to do is to come up with a design (in picture), and i'll build the template myself.

Actually, if this person is a graphics pro, you're getting away pretty reasonably. I wouldn't necessarily call $450 a rip-off for good graphics work.

That's probably "more or less" equal to just a days work for a decent designer, and doing templates for several pages can take several days depending on the complexities and requirements.

Is there someplace those needing a web designer can go to get an idea of what the rates should be?

One thing you want to look at. First require a portfolio showing past work. Make sure they can do the type of work you are looking for.

For a good design, looks like your getting a good deal to me.

Lawyers have lots of money, so can afford to spend more. That's how a lot of people generate quotes.
