I want to create a website where I can setup two different groups (eg gold and silver). Once members are registered with one of these groups and login they are redirected to a group specific page.

From this point I am going to create some dynamic content based on user specific variables.

I have tried Joomla but have had no success and unfortunately no help from the forum over there. Please can you suggest a CMS which will help me implement this type of group access?

Have you considered using a forum like phpBB (which allows membership groups) and using integramod to build a CMS around it??

http://www.expressionengine.com/ has member groups functionality, you can display content based on the members logged in status
