We will be implementing our new web site in a few months and I am coming down to the last few touch ups. But one of the things I am having a problem with is finding a reliable proven CAPTCHA program or software. I don't want some thing that someone else host for me. I want something that I control myself on my server. If anyone knows of one could they please let me know about it so I can take a look or any other options that might help.

Thanks

I took someone else's CAPTCHA code and extended it. You can download it at http://www.teratask.com/captcha/captcha.zip . I found it on another forum, but don't want to post a competitive link in here. If you PM me, I'll give you the link to the forum where there is more discussion. You can see the CAPTCHA code demo at http://www.teratask.com/captcha/

I'd like to see the code, but I don't understand why I need to PM you...

lol. Well, that's definitely your choice. Odd that you wouldn't want to post, but you'd exert more energy to PM. Have fun with that.

If you are a coder, I'd recommend adapting the NoSpam!/Anti-Bot text based captcha mod instead of an image based one. They work great and are more accessible to vision impaired visitors.

Than some. Audio and visual, as does the free, non-software-specific code I offered you, covers everyone who can see and/or hear. Interesting thread to join, though, as I didn't realize how many were happy to take lesser techniques. The only thing better than what I've provided (of course, on the back of the dude who originally provided the code) is RECAPTCHA which takes text known to be non-calculable for the images, but that's hosted elsewhere and you specifically indicated a distaste for such text.

Don't believe me? Then study what CAPTCHA stands for and why it is efficient when correctly implemented. Most CAPTCHA hacking techniques hack the implementation and not the image/audio itself.

Best wishes!

Jeremy, I haven't examined the solution you presented, so don't take my comments personally.

I do however, own a site that caters to an audience which is largely photosensitive/vision impaired. A large number of them browse with images disabled. Not all of them have speakers/audio hooked up. A simple text Q & A works best for them. YMMV.

Bernard: I don't take it personally at all. But, I do have a question: If they can't see or hear, how do they know what they're supposed to answer?

I'm not trying to be a dick, just trying to understand. I put more effort forth in trying to make my stuff compatible for people not as able as I am when I had the opportunity to visit a friend's house whose has a non-functioning arm. His stuff read it aloud to him (including, TD's which is why I stopped doing table-based layouts).

Text-only is something that I can personally hack very easily, so I avoid that as the only solution (including those which involve simple mathematics as the average user doesn't know advanced math [though, I do], so it has to be something easy for the "average user").

Any enlightenment is greatly appreciated.

They can't see *images*. They read text just fine.

Animated images or even some colors can trigger seizure activity in people who are photosensitive, so they disable flash and images in their browsers. Those with extreme photosensitivity may even use special text-only browsers.

The solutions I highlighted do not provide text based copies of the standard captcha system whereby users need to repeat a string of characters. The solutions I highlighted allow admins to design a series of questions and answers (open ended or multiple choice) that visitors must answer. The prompts are delivered randomly and admins can change up the Q&A pairings at any time. Here's a sample of some that I've used (or are similar to some that I've used):
Quote:
Type the last word in this sentence.:sentence
Which of the following is an animal? car, moon, dog, hair:dog
Which of the following is a planet? toy, cat, Mars, shampoo:Mars
Type the number (digit) seven:7
Spell the number 1:one
Are you a human?:yes
Which of the following is a food? shoe, glue, blue, sandwich:sandwich
Which of the following is a liquid? red, green, milk, computer:milk
What is two times two?:four:4
I haven't had a single automated registration on my forums since implementing these systems.
