What type of image/s do you use in your Websites. Do you use images? (some graphics can be created without images).

I still use GIFs mostly, but PNGs sometimes. JPGs are still used for the photo-type images.

what do you mean you can create graphics without images?

I use PSP and it allows you to export images as compressed files, and I love it. It can cut the file size in half and sometimes more. Plus it'll set up slicing and mapping for you.

I almost entirely use jpg, simply because I can't stand the 256 color resolution of gif. I would like to start using png, but I hate the fact that
IE still doesn't support it properly. That in itself could be a whole new thread.

You can create small design graphics without the use of images. For example, occasionally you might see a colored-line or two somewhere on the site to give it a little personality. That can be done just by creating a div and the proper CSS code.

i use both JPG and GIF. I use JPG for images with lots of colors and GIF for things that use few colors. Photoshop has a nice feature called "save for web" we you can preview your picture before saving and optimize both size and quality before you even save it.

Ditto

Since the patent expired on that GIF compression method half the supposed reason for PNG's is gone along with that MSIE is too backward to support them properly (If it weren't for that then that I would probably use mainly PNG imgs).

All my graphics are created and cut in photoshop (though I never trust automatically generated html).

Photoshop by far the best of the best. but anyways back to the topic...

Each of those image types are good for something... As a matter of fact a web-comic author Sean Howard (a.k.a. Squidi) has layed it all out for the world to see the adress is:

http://www.squidi.net/features/amd/howto/gifpng.php

The problem is that the page (above) was supposed to be a tutorial for making a web-comic which Sean references a few times...

When you're designing gif's, in the color palate, always check "browser safe colors". This will keep you within the 256 color limit and avoid nasty color variations that are different than what you had in mind. Your images should also be in RGB mode.

I always use a GIF or a JPG. In most cases, a photo is smaller in size (which means it loads faster) with JPG, but low-color graphics load much faster in GIF format. For simple lines and graphics, I use an old program called Microsoft Image Composer. It comes with FrontPage 98 & 2000. It is very quick and easy to work with. Works great!
