- Where do you sell your freelance abilities?

Meaning, where do go to advertise your skills etc. So you make sales.

I think the biggest sites is rentacoder.com or elance.com. But be prepared to be underbid by people from countries in eastern europe or asia.

I started using Guru.com for a while and got a couple of jobs off of there.

I then moved over to Sitepoint and got a lot of work off of there - it seemed like the people there were more honest (or at least you had a trail of posts, etc).

I met Lee (the forum owner) there and have been working almost exclusively for him for over a year now.

I do not do alot of freelancing work myself, but I hire alot of freelancers and I would really recommend www.rentacoder.com to both freelancers and buyers.

Through friends and family. Local jobs are the best for what I can do. Plus, they are some of the higher paying ones.

I'm trying article marketing with a twist: writing for already established content publishers, and seeing if that results in any business. Hopefully, my first article will be published later this week on a big web dev site (I'll edit this if it does).

Guru.com and elance.com are certainly there to help you succeed.

if you wish to get some work for free try some off-line advertising, word-of-mouth and carpet-bombing.

You can try craigslist.com - it's an amazing free resource.:taz:

Years ago when I was getting in to the design/development business one thing that was absolutely huge for getting my name out there was doing pro bono work to build a portfolio.

The fact of the matter is, it really doesn't matter what you charge. It matters what work you've done. If you don't have previous work or a place for potential clients to see previous work, you're missing out on a ton of work.

Do a few pro bono projects...possibly even for some local non-profits, so you're helping people in the process...and then word of mouth becomes much easier.

It took me a while to get clients. I just turned 17 last week, but I started in my late 14th year. It took me to late 15s or early 16 to develope my web designing skill to get clients. Now I use Clantemplates.com (Don't really recommend unless on template staff, then still you only get gaming clients which is fine for me, saying I live with my parents). I used Sitepoint.com, WebhostingTalk.com, I tried Yaxay.com a while, basically I get them word of mouth now.

UM hum except that supply FAR exceeds demand. Unless you enjoy being the lowest bidder which may work fine if you live in INdia but you wont be able to make a living in the US.

I've found that getting freelance work comes from word of mouth and some posts on different forums. I haven't really gone into detail about freelance work, so I haven't done much. However, some of it does come from different forums and word of mouth.

I've gotten almost all of my work from Sitepoint. However I'm trying to break into the local market at the moment. It's hard since I'm not even out of college yet.

If you're marketing software products/templates/etc. then you can also post samples and free trials at Download.com. This can be quite effective.
