Spam gives a bad image to your site though, believe me I tried.

i have the same problem currently as well. there used to be an official team forum for the team i have on my forum, but when that closed many people would not come because of the spam. now i try to use strategies like optimizing the title and then including my keyword as much as possible

Search engines is the best choice in my opinion. But getting a top ranking can sometimes be hard. So banner exchanging can sometimes be a good idea also.

Always avoid spam, it isn't really worth it. Good ways of getting traffic are thru basic SEO of your site and forums to get visitors from the search engines. Submit your site to relevant directories. Post on relevant boards, with your signature. Partner with other sites for reciprocal links or 3-way links.

I agree. The current most important factor for search engines is the anchor text. Get links from lots of sites with your anchor text in the link, and you'll start to see some visitors coming soon! 8)

it takes time money effort and patience, but keyword rich anchor text is the key to kicking but in Google.

keyword rich pages can help a good bit with Yahoo! too.

In this regard, I just want to ask if banner exchange still works? And does this banner exchange considered by spiders as back link ?
