Do you consider this essential? Do you have one on yours?

Personally, I think any serious website that is used for anything beyond a reference page for an old newsgroup needs one. The Pew research group said that 90% of Americans who use the internet have accessed at least one forum at one time, and 79% of them have been or are members of atleast one forum. And then there are foreign visitors. IMO, its the future of the net, so I'll be using it.

Are you talking about some sort of portal system? Or do you mean a website that has a link to your forum on it? Many forums are using this, but I don't really like it that much. I find it's too much. For a domain name forum or webmaster forum, this feature wouldn't serve too much purpose because everything I need is on this forum. They are pretty nice though.

Well either way. Personally, I think it should be hosted on site but without a portal, since a portal is like a second, but vastly inferior site homepage.

Yeah I see what you're saying. Having a website is good. Many of the domain name forums don't have them though, because it's really too much, and is not needed. People that go to these forums want to get down to business and buy or sell there names, etc.

I think forums are useful if used properly. Sometimes forums spoil a site with people using it to abuse each other etc... as you say any site other than an information site can benefit from it

Having a forum good for:
1. Hits... // Members
2. Links Exchange // Members' signature
3. Pagerank // With the links and hits

I might consider to get a forum for my site as well? LOL~!

Yeah, but that's why you've got to have a good forum staff.
