Are there any reasonably comparable pieces of freeware that can be a satisfactory substitute to photoshop? I'd like it to have some of the same features. What do you recommend?

I'm not sure if you will find any freeware similar to photoshop, but there are some cheaper ways to go.

- Corel Paint Shop Pro is a cheaper way to, while it doesn't have every single feature photoshop has, it does the job.

- Roxio Photosuite is another cheaper one with almost as many features as photoshop. Good buy also.

I would recommend just buying photoshop. Spending the extra money is worth it, and it really makes a difference, as these cheaper programs don't re render images that are resized. I don't think, I am not positive though, as I really only use Photoshop for my images.

Hope this helps,

Jason F.

Thanks. I've heard mixed things about it. Some people think its actually better. But others see it as photoshop's retarded cousin (so to speak).

Photoshop isn't too expensive now. You can buy them on EBay for cheap. You can also look online, and other places and find them cheaper. I recommend Photoshop for graphics.

Photoshop actually goes pretty high on ebay. If you look closely the ones that are the cheap ones are the ones that are OEM.

I dont think gimp is as good as photoshop but it is an excellent piece of software considering its free, you can produce some very professional stuff with it.

I'd say Paint Shop Pro is your best bet, if your looking to purchase. Chances are, you won't even notice the features that it lacks with the things you'll be doing as a beginner.\

Edit: Well, this thread's kind of old...
Oh well.
