What is a favicon?

A favicon is that little image that you see next to the website adress on most browsers. When you bookmark a page that has a favicon, it will display next to the bookmark name.

How to Make

Open adobe photoshop, create a new file with the dimensions 16x16px. This is very small to draw into, so either zoom into it so it looks huge, or start with a larger image size and adjust the image size at the end so it is 16x16px.

Draw your image. Make it simple - but still effective. Like Yahoo!'s is a Y! and Google's is a G.

You can now save the file as a Windwos Icon file type (.ico) If you do not have this option in photoshop you may need a plugin. Call the file favicon.ico

Upload the favicon.ico to the root directory of your webspace. That is, the folder with the first index file in it.

Thats all there is too it, you now have your own special and unique favicon on you site.

Thanx for this nice and clean tutorial. I liked it. I already knew how to make favicons and I think it is not much of use for me. Displaying my firms logo in the URL bar is not gonna help the visitors much. I only aim @ getting more visitors to my website and helping them to get the best from me.

a favicon helps "building" up your profile thoo..
its not the main focus of the profile ofcourse..
but in the long run it helps.
