Start by running your own forum, phpbb is good for this sort of thing.

Apply a few mods, and tweak the code.

You will soon learn...

Tutorials are not very good as they make you learn in the style of the author, not your way.

Start here, http://www.w3schools.com/php/default.asp
I suggest, get some good book...if you are a complete newbie to programming stuff, one of the dummies book will be good, otherwise go for the PHP Bible

p.s: You can download the books from the net

If your looking for books, both "PHP in a nutshell" and "The PHP 5 Bible" are good reads, for both begginers and advanced. Knowing 27 languages you can get mixed up a but Both books are available online from chapters.

http://www.hudzilla.org/phpbook/

That's where I learned. It's the best site I've found for learning PHP.

The link Valentino posted was the best thing I found. Just throw yourself in at the deep end and make something like a simple site CMS, then as you get better you can add and change things. Saying that I'm still not very good at php.

There is a book that I bought, called "SAMS Teach Yourself PHP, MySQL, and Apache in 24 Hours". Basically, it's a book containing lessons to all three of those in 24 lessons, so if you wanted to do it straight I guess you could.

It's really good, but I've only gotten to the 3rd or 4th section in PHP because I've had other stuff. Learning through experience is good too, especially working on a forum using phpBB because you can modify the code yourself.

I've got the same book - although in ebook version from blueportal.org (free, though it's not legit) - and I found that while it's good for teaching you the bascis, it doesn't have much info in there. Good for people first starting out, but not for people who already know a bit and want to learn more. SAMS books are usually really good though.

Also, the php.net site has a good reference on there. phpfreaks.com is also a good forum for learning php - although some of the members there are a bit rude - they think their **** don't stink.

Well, you don't really need anything to learn PHP, but it does help if you have some programming/scripting experience such as maybe java or javascript.

I shouldn't think PHP is gonna be hard to learn so go for it!
