I would personally say this is a bargain even at the higher mark. I spent a good 100 hours building a website (and to top it off, it was on a subdomain free host) and I had to upload every file without using ftp. If I was earning say 6.00 dollars an hour for my months work, it would have easily have been 600.00 dollars worth.
If I could have had that all done for the price you mentioned, heck yes, now that I look back. But you see, when you only have time and not money, the value is seen from that angle.
The good thing about the time I invested, is that I still have all the images, and pages, and they can easily be transfered to my own domain, plus I can use the ftp thingy to do it.

It really depends on how you are paying.
Some people do it for cheap, some do it for more.

In the freelance world, $150 - $300 for a 1 page .psd seems to be average. (for someone who's decent)
Designs can easily get well into the thousands though.

$200 for a full site is horrible. However, I've been there. Sometimes when you just get going you have to take the jobs when you can get them, and build up your portfolio. If you have the talent, you will eventually get some clients willing to pay more.

the average price I pay for a layout is around 120 dollars for a PSD, and another 30 or so to have it coded well.
It all depends where you look though, you can find good quality for 100 and terrible quality for 350.

A regular design of a regular website, usually with no flash would go around $50-2000 or more depending on the work and time put into it. If you were to get a flash website design, it would be well over double the regular website amount.

I think freelancers and companies charging anything less than $500 for a website are making it hard for everyone else. Thing is alot of people don't really know what a good design looks like and therefore go with the cheapest deal. All they think of is a "I need a website". I think website design is a art, you either have it or you don't. My advice is set your price and stick to them.
If your work is top shelf then you will get customers!

A general rule of thumb I use to price web developpment jobs is to first find out the level of enthusiasm and preparedness of a potential client. Usually, clients that throw the proverbial "How much for a site?" line around tend to start off with a higher price tag. The more a client knows what he wants, the lower the price gets (relatively).
Over the years, it became clear that clients who do not do a minimum of research and who do not have clear requirements are the ones that end up making you 1) frustrated and 2) poorer.
basically, well written requirements = good price, unprepared = high price.
Cheers,
Dylan

I don't see why people would pay more for a flash site, flash really blows in my book. One of my pet hates.
But anyway... The price should also depend on what you are paying for, it can start at a simple psd design, then it can get coded using css and html, and then on top of that a php back end could be developed. It really depends on how much work is being done, the time frame, and the skills of the person involved.

$400 is what I am being charged for a "friend" to build me a site. I am paying for the hosting and proving her access to my hosting company's site to build the site. Is this a fair price? I am not sure about her coding skills but will ask and if there is anything else I should ask her prior to committing, please let me know.
thanks! see below for the specs for the site
Up to 5 pages
Custom graphics and animation(limited)
Shopping Cart (PayPal)
I provide all pictures and content
2 months of maintenace after project is over

The price for the web design depends upon various factors ... like SEO friendliness, flash/non flash, uniqueness etc. So it may start from $50 to a maximum of $1000.

It is really wild. As others have said it cna vary. Ive seen amazing designers selling unique designs for $20 bucks, and people making html only pages selling them for $600. You have to know the prices if you are buying. If you are selling you have to know your target buyer.

We charge anywhere from $499 - $10,000+. It really depends on the site, the functionality, and the overall design time. If you do not give the best work possible then you shouldn't be in the business in the first place.
I have build $500 websites and those clients were just as happy as a large corporation who just got their dream site for 8k.
On average though, I charge about 1400.00. My primary target group though is companies without a web presence who are looking to gain exposure to the online client base and have a virtual front for their company. My 1400.00 package comes with semi-custom design, and a fully manageable back end client that allows even those who have zero coding experience to completely delegate content and many different aspects of the website.
