There are a lot of ways for you to get a template.

1) You can make one yourself.
2) You can hire a webdesigner / coder to make one for you.
3) You can open the little known tool named as Google and search for "website template", "free website template", web template" or anything in that line of thoughts.
4) And the lazy solution is to go to OpenDesigns.org, register and download some templates.

I, myself, recommend one of the first 3 ways. The second one is better, you can have it done to your own liking.

there's also oswd(dot)org. over 2000 templates, free of charge. It has many very professional business-type templates, some of which I use on my own sites.

Good luck,
Dylan

There are many free sites, but to have a website with a non-unique and un-new template is very bad.

Gatt,

I see your point about not being unique but I wouldn't say it's "very bad". For one thing, the design might not be unique but if the content is, there will be no impact whatsoever on the success of the site. In fact, a well designed template, even if it is used elsewhere, will take into account the "standards" established over the years and make the user experience a lot more enjoyable than using a unique, usability-impaired template.

This simple piece of advice is worth gold when it comes to using free templates: make it your own. Add components, changes colors, change fonts, mix templates, extend the functionality of the template.

Cheers,
Dylan

Your best bet is to just take the time to make your own. not only will it be unique, but it will increase your coding skill by making it. The more you code, the better you get.

I took a look at some of those sites and I was slightly impressed as to what is freely available. As a professional web designer, I will be using some of those as base templates.

The key to remember is who the web site is targeted toward! The vast majority of Internet users will most likely not know your site was a free template. The ultra minority will see that, but they are not your target audience.

You could invest the time in creating your own, but there is no direct payback for that effort. I say, invest time in what makes you money, if your primary business is not web design, then grab a template and focus on quality content and your business purpose.

I wouldn't spend a dime just because the site is pretty or unique.

For all of you telling the person do do it himself I have a few obvious things I'd like to point out to you, more like questions actually....

If the person could design a site themselves do you think they would be here asking where to get free templates?

If the person were telling you they needed to build an offline store would you tell them to build it themself? I mean that will increase their building and architecture skill... right?

Not everyone who is a successful web entrepreneur wants or even needs to be a designer....

Is this legal? If so this would be great. A lot of times I cannot take design jobs because of certain positioning etc that I cannot code. It would be great if I could get some simple columned layouts to base my designs off of. I am not sure about the licensing though.
