Hey everyone,
I'm trying to make a website and I have a little experience in visual basic, java and C, but don't know any web design languages... I'm a real beginner in this area.. On the site, I'd like to have the usual things that other sites have like buttons and stuff, but also a way for me to constantly upload videos of new apartments and/or picture slide shows every week. Please let me know where I should start. I got dreamweaver and frontpage but apparently people recommend learning HTML from scratch? Should I learn HTML or XHTML? what about CSS? After this, should I learn flash or javascript?

Please let me know step by step what I need to learn (in terms of programming languages) to get what I want on the webpage, thanks! Also... could you tell me how long it'll take me to make this webpage?

You have some good questions, here is what I can suggest:

1) learn how to code HTML (or XHTML) by hand - use Notepad as your editor until you know this inside and out.

2) then work on learning CSS. Using a combination of both HTML and CSS when designing sites is going to be considered a must.

3) the first programming language I would recommend is PHP since there is such wide support for it on the web. I personally think ColdFusion is better and easier to use, but that is another discussion. I like ColdFusion better because it is tag based and that made it easy to learn for me.

4) learn some basic graphics skills. Get yourself an old copy of Photoshop and find some tutorials on making web graphics (easy to find in google) and practice.

-- dont worry too much about Flash until you get through these steps

I agree with dadofgage, learn xhtml which is not that much different to html anyway but xhtml is the recommended thing going forward with web design. Also learn CSS to control your design layout. Dump Frontpage and use Dreamweaver if your going to code in an IDE as Frontpage is renowned for adding extra proprietary code in design view and dreamweaver doesn't for the majority of things you can do in design view. Learn to code in code view though as you'll start to understand the code itself and it gives you much greater control of your code then duck over to design view for a quick glance at how it's coming along. Remember thought that dreamweaver design view doesn't render perfectly so you'll still need to check your layouts in different browsers to make sure it's displaying correctly. Good Luck!

Ohh yeah plus learn javascript first if your doing xhtml or html as you'll be able to have more use for it than Flash. Flash is nice to learn but more of a bonus than a necessity if you just want to build sites for affiliate marketing and as for how long it will take... depends on how quickly you learn plus how complex the site is going to be.
