The <br> is considered just HTML while <br /> is considered XHTML.

The output that each of them generate is the exact same thing.

Which one to use?

It depends on what you have declared your page type to be - HTML or XHTML.

<br /> is technically correct. It is actually "<br />" not "<br/>".

It doesn't really matter. Browsers will display it the same whether its "correct" or not. But it does mean the code validates W3C standards.
