The is considered just HTML while is considered XHTML.

The output that each of them generate is the exact same thing.

Which one to use?

It depends on what you have declared your page type to be - HTML or XHTML.

is technically correct. It is actually " " not " ".

It doesn't really matter. Browsers will display it the same whether its "correct" or not. But it does mean the code validates W3C standards.
