Wow, The original questioner is probably really lost in this conversation. I think a distinction should be drawn between "search engine friendly" and SEO.
The questioner simply wanted to know the basics to keep in mind while building their site, I think.
Also, the question can never really be answered completely since Google and the other search engines are constantly changing their methods and keep those changes closely guarded.
Just my 2 cents worth.
