I'm just wondering if people are still doing tweaks to their sites to be backward compatible with IE6.

I'm contemplating putting in an IE6 hack for the PNG-alpha transparency issue on my site, but it being a CSS backround-image I'm going to have to go through some hoops. Just not sure if it's worth it.

What percentage constitutes a "Vast majority" of users who are no longer using an outdated browser version? Of course I ask this having just come back from my in-laws, who are still using IE6.

Just thought it would be worth checking with the community.

My school still has ie6 on all its computers, and I'm assuming most business's or corporations do so as well in the office.

It all depends on the target demographic of the sites expected audience.

But it will be somewhere between "them all" and "a few of them"

I would definitely account for IE6 because it is still widely used. But just like chrishirst said it really depends on your target audience. If you are targeting technology, computer or internet related businesses then its not to important because they will all have updated browsers but if you are targeting general public or an older audience then definitely make sure it works in IE6 because alot of these people still use 6 and don't care to update their browser.

I can tell you what are the google analytics for my page: 43,63% ( 1st place ) is IE, while 58,06% is IE6, while page of my friend has 57% for FF and 41% for IE ( 60% IE6) - still a large number of page visitors using IE6.

Anyway just make separate style sheet for IE6 -> you can't leave 25% of you visitors with a mess on your page

W3schools is a technical orientated site, so will see more visitors using the latest browsers.

What is sad, however, is that their statistics show that IE6 is still used by more people than IE7. For a tech-oriented site, that's a little scary as IE6 may have higher usage outside of the tech world.

IE 6 will still be dominant for quite a while I would recommend supporting it. Normally you will see that the taking over of one version from the next take months and months. Take a look at Vista and XP for eg, XP is still quite dominant.

Definitely! Even my website on Flash (i.e. frequented by web-developer types) of the 28% of visitors who use IE, one third of them use IE6. Besides, our website caters for Safari, even though the fact that more people use IE6 than Saafari. We do our best, you can't afford to knock off 10% of visitors. THink if your boss told you they were giving you a 10% pay cut. That's why IE6 still needs catering for.
