Hi,

In your opinion, is it a good idea to make corporate sites, or sites selling services considered to be more 'serious', i.e. I.T. solutions, is it generally a good idea to follow 'web2.0' fashion trends, or is ti better to stick with the 'plaing and boring' serious look?

I've had an IT company come looking for a corporate re-design of their site, and I'm unsure whether to take the risk, or stay safe?

Any guys got any good examples of the 'web2.0' (ok, I promise to stop air quoting it now ) working on corporate sites?

Cheers,
Liam

Does anyone else know what the heck this web2.0 is supposed to mean? It keeps getting passed around like it is candy or something...

I agree, I did not know that it related to design. I thought it was just more code oriented which enabled people to do more sophisticated things especially with social networking sites.

Here are some corporate sites that I do not think are boring:

If I'm searching for a hp printer model x I only care about price, specs, image, and reviews. I don't think most corporate sites need to be fancy, just professional.

If its a corporate site for a museum, it better look pretty. I'd say its market dependent.

Unfortunately, Web 2.0 has been associated with certain design trends when the whole '2.0' thing really has NOTHING to do with design.

That being said, I don't think it would be at all detrimental to use some of those trends (which is slowing, BTW), but use them sparingly. You can still have a professional, tasteful "corporate" site.

Web 2.0 these days seems to be anything but what I thought the definition was when I first read about it.

These days, it seems using css, tableless design, and looks like something that may be found any one of the now hundreds of css showcase sites is considered Web 2.0....

I'm confused myself... oh well, if you can't beat em ... join em!

I'm still fuzzy on what we are calling Web2.0 design. Does it mean cascading style sheets plus table free design?

If that's the case, then there is no problem at all with making corporate sites this way.

No, the whole 'Web 2.0 design' thing is bright colors, glassy buttons, glass-floor effects, those funky 'badges' (which I hate).. etc. Here's a list of "web 2.0 design" effects: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2007...ials-round-up/
