FTP Permissions questions

Hi,
This is going to seem like a silly question, but, when you set the CHMOD permission for a folder, does it subsequently set all of the files inside that folder, to the same permission, or do you need to set each individual file like you want it?

I'm asking this because I am installing a script and I have to have ALL of my files set 744. If I set that parent directory with that permission, should not all the rest therein be the same? {(Said parent folder has over 300 files!)} How would I accomplish this?

Not usually, but it depends on your FTP client. Some may do this for you.

Ask your host to do it for you, they should be able to do it with no trouble at all, unless you have SSH access.

Hi Anacrusis,
Thanks for answering so quickly.

Would this be why I am getting 403 "Forbidden" error pages trying to submit the install page? My host as them set another way?

If you don't have permissions to view the directory then yes, that is why you'd be seeing that error.

What type of install page are you using? If it's submiting to a cgi script then that script would need execute permissions.

I was trying to install PHPBB's EasyMod.
When I started I was able to reach the installation page fine, but when I submitted it, I got the 403 error. Then I started trying to set the permissions (I am using CuteFTP) to 744 like the directions said, but in the process of trying to set those permissions, I now cannot reach the page at all

Any ideas?
