Notepad...

Its the best way to learn. I hardly ever use the WYSIWYG part of dreamweaver... Usually its better to write your own code.

I'd have to agree, there's no need for a so-called 'website design program', a text editor is all that is required - and it's also the best way to LEARN to code HTML and CSS. Once you've got that down, then using a program like DW, which IMO is NOT for beginners, can be a useful TOOL to speed things up.

I have used WYSIWYG programs with great success. I still add my own coding here and there for certain things, but to get an overall feel of how your site is going to look, that's one of the best ways to go, especially if you are not comfortable with writing only code. Plus, once you build your site, you can use notepad to look at the code, and then get an idea of how to write code.

I would question why you want to use this kind of software to begin with.
Are you going to create your own site? You're better off paying for custom graphics and a theme.
Offer web design services to others? Best to learn to code things properly through Notepad so that, as suggested above, it's a tool.

As to free ones, many web hosts include them when you buy hosting. But these programs are typically useless junk there to sell you on their hosting. Do you need software? Design skills? A website? Ask yourself these questions before investing your time/and or money first.

Why use Notepad? There's a lot of better text editors out there, like Aptana Studio, which is a web development IDE. I've been using this to edit my php code, and it features syntax highlighting, code collapsing, auto-complete, suggestions, ftp access, inline reference, etc. Oh yeah, it's also free.

I am not a professional web designer. I just design pages as a hobby. The one I use is called web page maker and its good for beginers. It has a drag and drop interface. You can check about it at downloads.com

I wrote a blog article a while back about 2 open source alternatives to Dreamweaver. You can check that out. The one that was most appealing to me was KompoZer.
http://kompozer.net/
KompoZer is not only free it is open source. So the program shows steady improvement as time goes on.

There are many editors' program and not only notepad. Personally, I used phpdesigner for my coding. I used DW but didn't like it. And ya, phpdesigner is only for coding and not like DW where you can drag things...
