Hi,

I'm new to the site and website design *as a business*. I've never had to think about what to do in between jobs because I never thought of it as a problem, before going into business I just worked at home. So now what do you do when your in between jobs (or if might be a better word)? I feel dumb just sitting here doing nothing. I'm more of a programmer than a designer, at heart.

Thanks for the help.

It's been a while since I had to think about what to do between jobs. When I first started working from home, there were some dry periods at first, but once I really got up and running, I never stopped. I'm also more of a coder than a designer, and have been able to make a living by contracting to design and development companies that already have too much work, and can do some of the project management for me. So don't just sit there, look for more things to do. Eventually it will just flow in.

If Im not working on a project, I am out selling my self and my work... Would be the same with any business.. when I owned my auto detailing business, when I wasn't out detailing, I was out getting more customers.

When you get busy enough, that time between projects will be much needed to catch up with things you didn't have time to do. I some times use that time to go take a vaction..

If you find yourself having a significant amount of down time, the best thing to do is go out there and sell your business more. I know it's anathema to most of us IT folk, but business is 90% getting out there and selling yourself and your company until you have a steady flow of customers.

Of course, if it's just a little downtime, you can do what I do and try picking up another programming language (or heck, a foreign language that may help your business, depending on where you're located) that can help you out.
