I think I'd spend most of that money on development. 10,000 pounds (dollars for me actually, I am in the US) really isn't enough now that I think about it. Of course I could do a lot of the development myself, but that is another story. I have always thought I could make a really cool social networking and storyboard site for amateur and aspiring screenwriters, playwrights, novelists, etc, if I had the time and resources to really do it.

Well, the best backend software would be something custom, of course.

Hmmm I don't know I would probably just make some niche ebook site and spend it all on market research, but if you meant specifically on the site then it would be some web 2.0 social site or web tool.

While it may seem like a lot of money, you probably wouldn't get much out of it. You would probably end up going with some offshore firm to get what you need done (but if you find a good one, there's nothing wrong with that).

I would probably develop:
A. A business app of some kind - monthly subscription revenue is awesome

B. Communication app - the way people communicate is important, and users are quick to flock to a good platform.

C. Save it until I thought of a good way to use it, perhaps a few months down the road (but I imagine that would be difficult for me) =D

I would never spend that much on a site. I would put in Max. 3000 into what I already have going on.

If I had that much probably get some professional graphics and basically invest the money in my business.
