Are they making money off of that feature kind of like the adsense search box that you embed on your site? Or is it to take the load off of the servers..?? thanks for the fast response by the way .. ;-)

Indirectly, Google is making money. If they offer new features that people like, and that keeps people using Google, they don't have to monetize any particular feature to make money, so long as they monetize other features.
