I'm interested in how much people are charging for website design. If you're willing to share, please answer (at least some of) the following and then indicate your hourly rate. (If you don't charge by the hour, divide your typical project rate by the number of hours it takes you.)
What programming languages do you use (i.e., HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, JavaScript, etc)?
Do you use a standards-based design (valid HTML, CSS)?
Which browsers do you test your websites in?
Do you have an internal checklist of things that must be done before a project is complete?
Do you use pre-made templates or design your own?
Do you use third-party software like Wordpress, Joomla, or Drupal?
Do you make dynamic or static websites?
Do you offer other services like graphic design, SEO, or writing?

I am not into this business but however I am capable of design a website and add some SEO as well. My cost generally starts from $75 and it included domain name and one month hosting as well.

You could barely get an hour of my time for $75 The rate depends on the complexity of the project.
What programming languages do you use (i.e., HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, JavaScript, etc)? HTML, CSS (which are not programming languages)
Do you use a standards-based design (valid HTML, CSS)? Nothing but!
Which browsers do you test your websites in? Firefox, Opera, IE6, IE7 - use Browsershots for others
Do you have an internal checklist of things that must be done before a project is complete? Yes.
Do you use pre-made templates or design your own? Design my own, generally.
Do you use third-party software like Wordpress, Joomla, or Drupal? No.
Do you make dynamic or static websites? Static for now.
Do you offer other services like graphic design, SEO, or writing? Graphic Design. Optimization goes w/o saying from the start.

I work as part of a web consulting firm. The financials are something we programmers don't have access to, or care about. But I charge my employer about what LRN charges for her time, and they add profit about and beyond that.

<rant>When somebody in 2008 charges for ASP Classic programming, multiple things are drastically wrong. It's like a doctor giving somebody an exorcism to cure pneumonia.</rant>
I use Transact SQL and ASP.NET ( C#) regularly.

I don't use any type of HTML or CSS regularly. But I can pound out XMLA like nobody's business. And some of the SQL generates XML that is combined with XSD to form (x)HTML directly.

I bet you can guess the answer to this one! As long as my code passes QA, someone else does the browser testing. Occasionally I'll look into things on the sites directly, to see how services and code are interacting to form output, and when I do, I use FF by preference.

Absolutely! This is agreed to and signed off on by both parties before we formally accept the project. Enterance and exit criteria.

The design people start from "scratch" - the customer requirements.

When it makes sense to, but never any of those 3.

I'll give you 3 guesses, but the first 2 don't count.

I'd like to do some writing, personally, but for me, it's just programming. They've been thinking about doing SEO work, and toyed around with it in the past, but especially in today's environment, we decided to stick with our strengths.
I'm somewhat outside the demographic you were looking for answers from, but I hope these are still helpful? I think the moral to take away from LNR's and my story is that, even in a recession, people are willing to pay for value. Doing fewer tasks with higher quality ( however the customer defines that) is a sustainable way to make a living.

I don't really think you're out of the demographic. The different perspective of working in a larger company is also useful. I quite agree with your moral as well. I think too many companies and individuals rush through their products, services, and deployment without taking the time to pay attention to quality control. Thank you, sir, for the input.

I would say I am around the $50 an hour mark.
I always judge how long the site will take, and work out a rate that works best for me and the customer!

Hi guys,
I will now add my honest view of how I hope to go forward in the world of web design. I am completely new to the subject and this will be reflected in how I price myself and how I deal with customers (who will no doubt be a lot smaller than some of your projects). I have made seven websites so far.
Here goes......
What programming languages do you use (i.e., HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, JavaScript, etc)? I use what ever it takes to get the job done in a secure and efficient manner, not touched ASP yet. Although, my prefered programming language is called 'Google search, copy paste'.
Do you use a standards-based design (valid HTML, CSS)? yes, I aim to make everything as 'compliant' as possible and use programs to check my work.
Which browsers do you test your websites in? As many as bloody possible, but only worry about the main ones (I already hate IE with a passion!), I use that website (name forgot) to check everything in general.
Do you have an internal checklist of things that must be done before a project is complete? Not really. I know as time progresses and my experience builds I will develop that 'checklist'.
Do you use pre-made templates or design your own? I use pre made templates, hack them into bits and put them back together how I like them. I cant build a full one yet.
Do you use third-party software like Wordpress, Joomla, or Drupal? Yes, I've done three wordpress sites and find it an enjoyable challenge.
Do you make dynamic or static websites? static (after visiting Wiki for a quick refresher).
Do you offer other services like graphic design, SEO, or writing? I love playing with the graphics and I'm not a bad writer (have sold a few content pages on DPoint.... Booooooooo I here you say). As for all this SEO.... I'm working on it.
So, what does an extreme newbie charge? I haven't charged anything yet! But I'm working on it. I hope this reply was an insight to the bottom end of the web design ladder.

"If sir has to ask the price, sir can't afford me"
What programming languages do you use (i.e., HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP, JavaScript, etc)?
- all the above regularly, ASP rarely
Do you use a standards-based design (valid HTML, CSS)?
- of course
Which browsers do you test your websites in?
- IE6-7, FF, Opera, Safari and use online tools to check the rest
Do you have an internal checklist of things that must be done before a project is complete?
- sometimes if it's a large or complex project
Do you use pre-made templates or design your own?
- have never used a premade template in my life!
Do you use third-party software like Wordpress, Joomla, or Drupal?
- yes but none of those. The two I most often are Expression Engine for CMS sites and Jshop for shopping sites.
Do you make dynamic or static websites?
- both, sometimes they're a bit of both!
Do you offer other services like graphic design, SEO, or writing?
- I offer anything the client wants. There's a great subniche market for webmasters with PC maintenance such as virus removal, system cleanups, software installs. Just why clients assume webmasters are computer wizards I'll never know, but who cares they pay me to do it!

This is why the word "cheap" has two meanings. One of them is generally a good thing, and the other is pejorative and insulting.
