Expanding menus too much?

I'm making a little site that will essentially be a list of links to things I am working on.

I am using some Javascript/SPRY to have an expanding menu type feature.

Do you think it is unnecessary and I should just have it static with everything on display or is it a useful addition to the page?

Ignore the content as that is just there as filler/padding.

Thanks

I wouldn't do it that way myself, too much clicking to see what's there. The title of a book comes to mind "Don't Make Me Think!"

Thanks for having a look.

You are correct, just thought I could jazz it up a bit but it doesnt really add anything to the page.

I always liked that effect. I'm not sure it's necessary here though. To me the issue is less that people have to click to see what's there as it is that there's so much room on the page, why not use some of it.

Even if you took everything in the menu and placed it in its own space on the page you'd still have a page with a lot of open space. I do think the accordion effect is nice, but I think there are better ways to use the space give the amount of information you're trying to present.

If you had a full page and were using the accordion just for a site menu then I'd think it was appropriate to use.

Looking at the home page of the site I like what you have. If you really want to use the accordion menu you can probably work it so it's on the left with the content on the right. You might also have the accordion open to reveal different text while the images load on the right.

I think it's fine now the way you have it, but if you do want to add the accordion you could. It just looked empty the way it was without anything else around it.

Vangogh has good advice for you here.

Myself, I think it is a bit much.

Always think first about your users/visitors rather than how cool you think something is.

Typically, users/visitors will be looking for navigation on the left, not so much functionality. IMHO, this confuses site navigation with site functionality too much.

Also, are you sure you want to go with framesets?

I'm not sure, but I think I see what you are going for here, and in a .NET evironment, ComponentArt has some cool tools you could use for what I think you're going for.
