I have been using FP98 to update my auto racing website since 1999. Up until a month ago I had built my own PC's but replaced my old 450mhz Win98 clunker with a new P4 3ghz multimedia machine.
The old PC was networked to the XP machine via a router, no problem, everthing went fine and I was online with both PC's with no problems. Mail, newsgroups, everything works fine. When I first setup the network I could view my entire website.
Somewhere along the line (totally unexpected so I didn't notice when this happened) I am unable to view the banners on my Site with the XP machine. If I add a new photo or update my "Tours" gallery I can view everything that I add. The banners are straight jpg or gif and some link to the companies websites. Nothing fancy or compex about it.
When I view document source I cannot see the html code for my banners. If I view the website on my old computer everything is fine.
A little background on what might have caused the problem and what didn't. The firewall in the router is not conflicting with the XP firewall, it worked when I first connected and tried bypassing the router and connecting directly to DSL. I don't notice anything unusual on any other website except my own. I did download SP2 but the problem happened prior to the download so that didn't cause it. Opening up the security in the browser has no effect and the thing worked at default settings in the beginning.
I did mess around with a couple website editors. I bought Namo but decided that I don't have time to read the manual and learn it until our racing season is over. I did open it up and fooled around with a copy of my website but decided to put it on the back burner. Next I installed FP98 because it's fast and easy. Then I installed Office 2000 which includes FP2000 but I like the FP98 interface better so I wasn't planning on using it, just wanted Word, Outlook, etc. FP2000 overlayed FP98 and I couldn't figure out how to put them in separate directories (XP must stand for Xtra problems). This was getting frustrating and downright humiliating for someone who has been building their own PC's since the 90's.
I uninstalled FP2000 and FP98 and reinstalled FP98 then downloaded OpenOffice until I can figure this mess out. Sometime during this messing around with Web editors I lost the banners on my website when viewing through my new PC. I tried Netsape, nothing. I tried using Firefox and Opera...still the same. Finally I ended up doing the image editing on the new PC and dropping the photos into the shared network folder and doing the changes on the old PC.
I'm not sure what happened, if I inadvertently changed some kind of permission setting in FP2000 or Namo that is somehow linked to the browser or this has something to do with XP. I am not looking for anyone to critique my site or tell me to go out and spend a bunch of money for yet another editor, just suggestions on what might be the problem. This is a hobby for me that I have been doing since 1997. I take photos, write for a racing paper and display some of my stuff on the website, it's not a commercial site or business.
I have asked the network administrator where I work and my son in law who is also a network administrator at a school district. They all suggested the obvious but my reasoning is it wouldn't have worked at first and then stopped working if it was one of the things they suggested.
The images aren't missing where you've got the little squares and outline where the image should be, they're gone as if they were never there in the first place. Friends tell me they can see the banners. Banners would include Northern Tool & Equipment, J&W Motorsports, and a host of others.
I'm trying to do this without having to reinstall XP but that might be the best solution if nobody has any suggestions. The page was displaying properly when I first hooked up the network so going back to square one might be the best solution but a time consuming one. If anyone has any suggestions short of a reinstall I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.
