I agree, Simple is always more effective,
Im of the opinion less is more,

A major HCI principle is:
If its not needed dont add it.

A lot of sites have bells & whistles on them to make them look cool, but generally end up confusing to the user and cluttering their mind...

I think the use of new technologies to enhance the web experience and the added hi-def quality will be used widely.

AJAX and some other things like SilverLight making the website seem more seemless. Meaning, it feels like a program more than web page.

New technology will used to make the website simple but attractive such that it reduces the time for designing and coding.

more actual content driven interactive dynamics. Real webmasters know hits and unique clicks are different, and metrics don't tell the whole tale. people spend their time and money where they find things to learn about that matter, things to read that inform and they want to know more about. That ain't a google box of ads the size of Cleveland anymore.

I agree the TheSam, more interactive sites will be available with newer systems similar to AJAX. I also think more flash websites are going to start to pop up once they become search engine friendly.

I reckon most of these "predictions" are about development, not design, and are more statements of the present than of what will change in 2009

Here's a prediction:

more than 80% of sites, by end 2009, will feature video (.flv format) on their front pages - retailers will use video files for EVERY SINGLE PRODUCT and media organisations like broadcasters will turn their websites into alternative broadcasting zones so they will set the standard in terms of layout and indeed advert placement methods.

As per design I think web 2.0 will continue as trend but would not be the must have any more.

Rather mix of web 2.0 style and simplistic flat look could be a new trend. For my upcoming sites I am thinking of that.
