I'd be interested in any expert opinion on what CMS (if any) is used at http://www.nin.com If its a one off custom, is there a way to determine what it may have been based on? I'm really keen on this sites integration with its forum. What CMS offers that level of integration? Joomla with Fireboard clearly is not it.

Looks custom to me, but it could be Drupal or Expression Engine. It's not always possible to tell with those two. Integrating with a forum isn't that hard with any system, as there are lots of pre-existing programs that can be installed in any directory.

Drupal does have a built in way of integrating a forum, if that is all you're interested in.

If it was me, I would do it all custom. I assume NIN can afford good developers, and custom systems are often much better than prepackaged ones.

No idea, but the poster said in the post that it would not, or would not do it well enough.

It looks like they started with a myspace/youtube clone script and then customized the template. I am sure you could get a similar look using Joomla if you added a few plug-ins for video and so on.

thanks for the replies - from what I could gather its a custom design. I'm sure most any CMS can be made to look like this site but I was impressed by the way it deftly handles such a massive amount of video/audio/user submitted content. Its really slick in the templating of the forum to match the site, I haven't come across too many CMS 'out of the box' that do that so well. Looks like I better work on styling my choice of CMS.
