Blog or portal system on site?

Hi, I want to give my site the feature of allowing visitors to "post a comment" for each news item posted in the index. Unboubtedly you have seen sites like this. Many use php-Nuke or postNuke to get the job done, but that isn't the way I want to go. I already have my layout the way I want it and it is hell to modify a site with programs like that installed. I want easy control of my layout, so all I really need is a simple blogging tool that I can easily make a link to on my index. Here is an example of a site that is laid out the way I want: http://shenmueplanet.com. Notice how the creator made a pretty straightforward code, but implement his blogging tool in a simple way embedded in a central table.

Any suggestions? I've searched Google top to bottom and all I can find are either "online journal" blog sites where you dont even get server access or complicated perl scripts that Im not advanced enough to work with. This is killing me . If someone could help out it would be much appreciated.

Yeah, I tried WordPress already to no avail. Im running a free Lycos test server before I put the real site up just to get the kinks out. Unfortunately, its a ***** to install stuff on a Tripod server. When I was setting it up it failed to generate me a password time and time again, so I gave up and deleted it.

Here is my test server, by the way: http://members.lycos.co.uk/rhaynog/cbrworld/?
It isn't much to look at at this point, but Im in the very early stages. Notice the link I made called "comments" That is where I want my blogger. I dont want it to mess with anything else on the site.

EDIT: Nevermind, I didnt upload that version with the link yet, but it should be pretty obvious what Im talking about.

Oh yeah, and those flash buttons are about to take a hike . This is my first site, but even I wouldn't use flash buttons.

EDIT 2: I just realized that this might be a good opportunity for debugging as well. I notice the site looks okay in IE, but looks like terrible in Firefox. Does anyone else notice anything worth pointing out regarding the core layout? (which is all it is at this point)
