Whoa, that's a big difference from what I am seeing on elance and rent-a-coder, I am seeing as they put it "experienced" webmasters charging as little as $10-15 an hour? Thanks for the deposit breakdown.

I don't live in a country where $20 is a weeks salary.

And in one case took a long while to find & fix the problems caused by "experienced 10 dollar an hour programmers" after the "expert in ASP" stopped answering emails.

I was wondering how anyone could make money on 10-15 per hour being "experienced" in this field?

To continue on another aspect this issue, what should a potential customer look for in a web designer? Yes, they are looking for cheap pricing but if you yourself had to hire a webdesigner for your project, what exactly would you be looking for in that person when 10 or more people contacts you with their offers to build your site?

I figure if I can get an answer to the above then I myself will have a better idea on what I can charge and how to approach customers.

I would look at their portfolio for everything I need. That is their work at it's most effective, and will show me what I'd get if I used them.

I charge for a annual maintenance package. I charge $500 for that and it includes unlimited text and image changes for they year, hosting and domain renewal, and adjusting keywords every month to keep their google rank. If they choose to not buy the package, then i charge 50$ an hour for text and image changes.

I question that as well because all the time and effort that one must put into web design projects will make the price skyrocket, especially in these times. Time is of the essence.

Maybe if they charge $10-15 per hour, they are just doing it to build their own clientèle steal someone else's.

I tell all my clients to look at work I have done in the past. This is also a good answer when asked "Why should I pay you for something my 15 year old nephew will do for free for me?"

If I host the site, 3 hours maintenance is included in the monthly fee. If I don't host the site or they opt out of the maintenance agreement it's $75/hour. I don't ever promise unlimited anything!
