hi, im beginning to do websites for people, and i looked at some competitors and they charge $175 for a 5 page site and get 50% up front , and $285 for a 10 page site and 50% up front. all money refundable if you dont like the site. is that reasonable? any advice greatly appreciated. thank you. derek

That might be a start when you need to build a portfolio, but most of the designers I know won't take a project on if the budget isn't at least $1000. $175 for 5 pages seems ludicrously small to me.

I'm currently doing a six page site, which I didn't do any of the graphic design for. I'm doing it by the hour, and my end is probably going to be about $300, just for coding. After I'm done, it goes to an SEO and QA guy who puts it all together and finalizes it. We're all freelancers, and I don't know what the actual bill is, but I assume a profit is being made.

thank you for that info wayfarer. as i build my portfolio of client work, i think i will increase it to maybe $300 for 5 pages. but in the beginning, ( i havent had one client yet) im going to charge low i think. as i get more confident and my skills develop, i will up the price i think. but thanks for that info. also, is Craigslist the best place to get work? i posted there and got 2 replies but i dont think theyre going to pan out because of their requirements. derek
