Im going to be starting a web design company, im just unsure on a couple of things. I will be hosting the websites i create, but if a client wants to make an edit to the website they need to be able to do so easily. What software is available where i could allow them to edit their websites without needing knowledge of ftp etc.

I will also be registering their domain name, whats the best way to do this? Can i just use my own domain registra account and register them in there but use my clients name and address?

For this you need a content management system (CMS). There are dozens of these. Check threads here for references.

I really like using wordpress where I can. It's directly viewed as a blog management system, but if you get crafty you can have a largely community supported web content management system that is easily customizeable and totally free.

It's not applicable in all scenario's, but it does a great job at what the usual customer wants. I highly suggest not making your own cms as it is very time consuming and is usually not very secure versus professionally and/or community supported applications unless you have a great deal of .net/php background, but is a great way to learn .net/php.

CMS certainly is a good choice...not the best choice. You still need to try and learn each CMS until you can find which one suit your designing, web management or technical skills. Most of all, it will suit your targetted customer.

Y-aji really make the point.. Never try to make your own CMS! Community support Open Source CMS is robust and most of the time is reliable..(I've been hacked only once for the past 4 years, but it's my personal fault, not the CMS...haha)

For me, I've been sticked on JOOMLA CMS
