Hi everyone,
New here and have been browsing a bit, but no answer to my type of question.

I am making a page with a simple little link. I need that link to target another window that is already open.

Example: The user is looking at Google in a window. The user opens this page in another window and the link targets the Google window.

Is this possible? It's probably something really simple and I'm just not thinking - or my luck it doesn't even exist LOL

Thanks in advance

On another note, you really shouldn't be opening windows all over the place, it's bad for usability and not good for accessibility either. There's a reason the 'target' attribute has been deprecated.

Interesting read - thanks LadynRed. I had thought opening a new window was sometimes preferable, on external links and pdf's for example. This article seems to be based on research done with people who aren't used tabbed browsers though - as it says the new window totally obscures the old one. Aren't most people used to (or getting used to) tabbed browsing now?

I still think opening a new window for a pdf is a good idea as they can be slow to load.

Well, the article was written before tabbed browsers were mainstream. Still, just opening a new window/tab for other content is not good for usability. PDF's are an exception I do occasionally make.

For external links, that old 'open it in a new window' was an effort to keep people on your site and it's a very bad idea. People know how to use their back buttons, and they do so liberally. You just should not try to force someone to stay on your site. If your site has something they want, they will come back
