Monitor resolution, settings and font sizes

Hi, I'm in the process of building a blog, but a couple of visitors have told me that my body font is too small for them to read comfortably. I've checked the blog on a couple of my computers, one with a screen setting of 1152 by 864 pixels (32 bit color) And the other at 1280 by 1024 pixels (again, 32 bit color) - both monitors are flatscreen (although I don't know how to find out their resolution) 17" and both are running XP and IE7.

One of the guys who's told me about the small font says his settings are 14400 by 900 (I think he means 1400?). The other guy hasn't volunteered his settings.

Baring all that in mind, my questions are:
  • How do I find what resoloution the monitors I'm using are, and how do those resoloutions effect website font size?
  • Should I be using px, em or % to size my font, and will any of them 'force' a universal size that will be the same whatever monitor settings/resolutions are being used)?
  • How does the font appear to you? (ignore the 'spider food' in the sidebar, it's not really meant for reading and is meant to be that size) http://sleazepit.blogspot.com/ (possibly NSFW)
  • How can I strike a happy medium between font that's legible and a font size that I'm happy with as regards appearence (I hate large font)?
Thanks in adavnce.

1280x1024 IS the resolution, as are the other sizes you mentioned

You should NOT be using px for font sizes, em or % is preferable. IE 7 and below will NOT allow users to re-size text set in px to something they CAN read, so it's best to stay away from px for font sizing.

My monitor resolution is set at 1280x1024, and your text is definitely on the small side. I know I'm old, but it needs to be legible. Just as long as you allow people to resize the text, it should be fine.

Thanks, LadynRed. Much appreciated. I'll go and start replacing all those px with the equivilent ems. There's only 700 to do, shouldn't take me long

Definitely small to read, but I do have the capability to zoom in with both of my browsers when I run across small text.

Good luck!
