Been designing a website recently, instead of using fixed widths and force scrolling for people with 800px wide resolution, i decided to use percentage widths.

Now all is well so far, when the screen is resized to 800px, a scrollbar appears (min-width).

At my full resolution (1366px wide) there is a pixel out of place on a few divs, whereas 1280 it is perfect.

Was just wondering what screen size I should be aiming at?

The generally accepted minimum these days is 1024x768. Anything lower is an extremely small percentage of users.

Although no source of data is completely accurate you can look at sites like http://marketshare.hitslink.com/report.aspx?qprid=17 to get a general idea - the "bigger picture" so to speak. Of course things can be very different on a site by site basis.

That's a good question Stefan, everyone has their own preferences on their monitor, no real standards.

Thank you Blue-Dreamer for submitting the link, I found the information interesting, although I had to laugh, I seen there was 0% for a resolution of 1920 x 1080. No I don't keep my monitor at that screen size.

Mine can do it but I don't have your young eyes to view it with. 1440 x 900 is what I enjoy the most. Even that at full screen makes some of those 800w table based sites look kind of dorky.

have you thought on your website detecting user's resolution and loading a different stylesheet configuration for each resolution value? (doesn't have to be all of them, just widescreen and 1024x768, for example)

Well you are 10" up on me Brades, I also have a 1080p, Full HD, Widescreen 22" LCD Display, and they highly recommend running the resolution at 1980 x 1080, but I am afraid I would have to haul out the binoculars to be able to see anything.

1024x768 is pretty much the standard to use. but these days the screen sizes are so varied, larger and larger screens may require a larger resolution. I would suggest sticking with fixed width.
